Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Board of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS)

The European Board of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine is a Working Group of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Section of the Union Européenne des Médecins Specialistes (U.E.M.S., European Union of Medical Specialists). It was founded by a separate statute in 1991.

The Board is interested in defining in clear terms­ "European Standards", i.e. the basic elements for a European training programme, the opportunities and conditions for training rotation, attachments, exchanges and the average level of required knowledge and technical competence. More specifically, Board aims are to harmonize the training in E.U. so as to ensure optimal rehabilitative care for patients in the countries of European Union. In addition, the Board will pursue the objectives of UEMS in so far as they apply to Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine

The main activities of the Board are:

•  Harmonization of PRM training in Europe
• Certification of PRM specialists (by examination and equivalence)
• Certification of PRM trainers
• Certification/Recertification of PRM training sites
• Continuing Medical Education and Recertification of PRM Specialists
• Accreditation of European congresses and Teaching Programmes

Certification Procedures

Certification of PRM Doctors

Board certification does not give an academic qualification but it means that the candidate has reached the European standards of competence in PRM. Above all, these procedures of certification and accreditation are the basis for a European network for intellectual exchanges and fellowship and for the clarification of the structure and activities of PRM for both Public Authorities and the general public.

Benefits for PRM Certified Specialists

The European Board of PRM is implementing a set of benefits for PRM Board Certified Specialists as well as for Board registered trainees:

• Free or low cost teaching programmes (such as European School Marseille),
• Reduced fees for European and National congresses,
• Reduced subscription fees for medical journals, etc.

There are three routes to become certified by the PRM Board of UEMS:

1. If you are a Final Year Trainee or a Young PRM Doctor, you need to sit the Examination, which is organized every year, in November, by the Board

 2. If you have practiced PRM as a licensed specialist for 10 years or more, you can apply for Board Certification by Equivalence.

 Per chi è specialista in MFR e lavora nel settore da almeno 10 anni può essere possibile conseguire la certificazione del Board dietro esame del solo curriculum

 3. If you were Board Certified more than 10 years ago, you will need to apply for Board Recertification.

The Role of CME/CPD (Continuing Medical Education / Continuing Professional Development) Committee is to evaluate the scientific events forwarded by the UEMS EACCME. This webpage presents the members of the committee, with contact details and useful information on accreditation procedures.

Registration of Trainees

Gli Specializzandi in MFR hanno l’opportunità di registrarsi gratuitamente nel sito del Board e usufruire di una serie di vantaggi

Trainees in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine can register with the European PRM Board of UEMS from the first year of their training. Registration is free and can be done online.
